Update...
The computer connection was never resolved so the notes and pictures from the voyage are being added now that we are home.

I apologize that the blog is almost exclusively in English, we didn't have the time to translate during the trip and it is really my project not Suzanne's. All comments are mine unless otherwise mentioned.

Tuesday May 2
Mostly uneventful trip to the airport and caught our flight. It's been awhile since I flew on a modern long-flight airliner so I was impressed by the entertainment center. A private screen in each seat back with free movies, TV shows and live 3D flight info.

Wed May 3
What time is it again? Arrived at London Heathrow at 9am (or 4am for us).


After immigration and customs we found our bus for the transfer to Gatwick which is half way between London and the English Channel. The whole trip was auto-routes and country side. Suzanne's first experience of driving on the left side.
We were starting to get tired by the time we boarded our flight to Venice, another 2 hours and another hour change in time zone so we touched down at 17h45, a bit late. We just missed our “vaporetto” water transport to Venice so had to wait a half hour for the next one which made us a half hour late to meet our Airbnb host.

We sent a message via the Airbnb site and when we arrived at our station Guglie she was there. Our apartment is a very short walk from there.

Our neighbourhood is a bit off the normal tourist track although in Venice you are never far from some tourist attraction.

We walked down to Rio tera S. Leonardo (a very busy shopping, restaurant, tourist street) for supper.

We then wandered home via some narrow alleys and through Campo Ghetto Nuovo which is contral to the Jewish neighbourhood and where the word “ghetto” originated.

Back home we collapsed into bed...

Nous avons trouves un café internet, donc un tout petit mise-à-jour. Hier le colissé et la fontaine de trevé et un premenade dans le centre ville. Aujourd'hui le Vatican, promenade le long du Tibre etc. Today we found an internet cafe so a brief update. Yesterday the coliseum, treve fountain and the downtown. Today the Vatican and walk along the Tibur etc. Update... (Sorry for the black and white pictures, the camera was incorrectly set for awhile before I noticed it.) Sun May 7 The tramway that passes nearby brought us to the Coloseum. It happened to be the day that entry was free, so we decided not to wait the hours necessary and walked through the surrounding area which is a foundation of Roman ruins, with structures from more recent eras built over them in places... monumental architecture from all historic periods.  The quantity of ancient structures is mind-blowing. Nous sommes partis d'Athen ce matin, vol avec Alitalia à Rome, train de l'aéroport à la gare Termini, 3 heures d'attentes, train de Rome à Bologne, transfert à train de Bolongne à Padue et taxi de la gare à notre chez nous... la même hôtesse Airbnb qu'en 2013. Update... This is one of the events of the Documenta, a public kitchen where 120 free meals are served each day... it is aimed at refugees, but everyone is welcome. In the same square as the above is this archeological site with roads and a cemetery that dates to the 9th century BC!. Wednesday May 17 No strikers at the station... we walked around our neighbourhood to Victoria Square where the economic crisis is noticeably more visible than where we are staying, although it is not far.  We walked towards the Omonia subway station past the Polytechnic and just missed a demonstration of striking workers and their supporters.   This is the entrance to the Polytechnic, I believe the rusted ...

Thur May 4 We finally woke up at 12h after making up for the sleep missed during our flight. Our apartment is great, clean, fully equipped and in a convenient but not too central location. We spent the afternoon walking a loop as described by Suzanne below. We returned home for supper than went to the train station and area and another loop through the neighbourhood near the station that led us to the Tre Archi (3 arches) bridge near home.
