Tuesday May 9
We returned to the Centale
Montemartini... a real treat for me with its huge machines and
industrial past.
After we took the subway to Barberini and did a
walking tour of sculptures by Bernini and then the Plaza Republica
area including a toilet stop at a McDo. We then walked the rest of
the way home.
Wednesday May 10
To the local bookstore café to verify
our flight for the next morning via Wifi, then the tramway to the
Coloseum which we visited, very impressive considering that it is
almost 2000 years old.
We than wandered around the area that is the
Forum and Paletine which are an incredible array of ruins on top of
ruins with buildings built on top.
That's Suzanne pretending that she is not there...
Where ever you go in this city there
are ruins or buildings going back over 2000 years with all eras since
then represented also. As mentioned earlier, I am most impressed by the Aurelian walls. There is a long
section between our apartment and the train station Termini, so we
are just outside of the walled part of the city.
Tomorrow we are up early to catch the
train to the airport at 6am and a flight at 8:45am to Athens.
Thursday May 11
Up at 5am after an almost sleepless
night and off the airport via a train. At the airport we got stuck
with extra baggage charges for my backpack that we expected but also
for Suzannes legal size suitcase because it was overweight... sigh
the down side of inexpensive tickets. At least Alitalia, which is
close to bankrupcy, is still flying.
The Athens airport has a train
that feeds into the subway system so we got to our Airbnb apartment
easily and only had to wait a few minutes for our host to arrive to
let us in. Once inside we found that there was no electicity. So our
host, Dimitri spent the afternoon trying to get that straightened out
and we finally had light just as the sun was setting.
Our neighbourhood is very
interesting... very working class... almost no touristy shops, but
little stores selling the sorts of things that normal people need. It
is amazing how many there are. Blocks will have up to 4 little
grocery stores selling fruit and vegetables plus basic food stuffs,
plus there are fruit and vegetable venders set up along the street
selling from trucks, or just setup beside the sidewalk. We found a
supermarket, small by our standards that has a better selection.

J'espère que vous trouverez plus de wifi à Athènes. Mais c'est pas grave, vous nous raconterez ça à votre retour. Bon séjour en Grèce.
